Fishing Line and Dehydration

Once fishing line has begun to dehydrate there’s no going back

Timothy Kusherets

Monofilament is the best bang for your buck for so many reasons and the argument to use it can no be issued the same as politics and religion; but for those who fish with it you’ll want to take note.
The sun is the enemy. For that matter, anything that causes your line to dehydrate is the enemy to a good day of fishing and the creator of a long list of complaints all the way home, and trust me, your spouse will get tired of hearing about it.
Keep fishing line out of the sun, away from dryers, and out of the garage. All those areas will dry out your fishing line in no time at all. Sure, line doesn’t really cost that much, but the nickels and dimes really do add up.
Once fishing line has begun to dehydrate there’s no going back and one of the worst things you can do after that is to fish with it. Yes, the line will let you know that it’s about to snap with a series of creaks and groans, but you don’t want to hear that sound when you’ve got a whopper on the end of it.
The best way to ensure your line stays as fresh as the day you bought it is to put them in baggies after spooling up each reel. While it is relatively easy to take care of you’d be surprised at how many anglers actually procrastinate with taking care of their lines. If you want a thrill, hand an anxious fisherman some dried out line and wait for him to hook a fish. The howling he does will trigger you to howl with laughter.
