This seam of water was holding a fairly large school of salmon prior to me plunking my rump on this great seat of a log. As an exeperiment, I decided to wade out to the hold, wait a few minutes, and then wade back to the other side of the river. Using slow methods of wading, taking me slightly downstream, the holding school soon moved back into the area. It's a salmomids ability to forgive that is amazing to me. There are thousands of ways to put fish off the bite and only a handful that can keep them on the bite, and that's what these experiments are all about. Notice the fast riffled water and the smooth surface of the eddy formed by the sunken log; finding a hold like this is extremely easy when you know how to "read" water.
